SOME SURVIVAL SKILLS YOU NEED TO HAVE AS A HIKER

Traveling out in the wild can be very dangerous that it will be wise for the traveler to learn some survival skills which will help him or her survive out there. That is why it is essential for hikers to develop some techniques that will not only help them survive but also interact with the wild. From these techniques the basic necessities for human survival are provided for; water, shelter, and food, sometimes clothing against the cold. Also, knowledge which helps in interaction with plants and animals for the sustenance of human life are gotten from these techniques.

These skills are mostly ideas which first came to fore with the first men and was practised by them for survival. Hunting, hiking, backpacking and horseback racing are some outdoor sports that require that the participants have some basic survival skills to look after themselves out there.

These skills are needed mostly for extreme situations when things go south and cannot be managed with the civilised habits developed in cities and towns over the years. Sometimes these skills are all  there is between a hiker and the lugubrious hands of death.


First Aid Application

Getting first aid can patch up an individual and let him or her function even with injuries which would have had the person incapacitated and unable to function at all. This skill is one of the most important in surviving the wild. Some wounds that would require the swift use of this skill include snake bite, spider bite, bone fracture, burns, heart attack, hemorrhage, hypothermia and hyperthermia, food poisoning among others.

There should be adequate knowledge of first aid and the possession of the kit. Also, possessing knowledge about the certain functions of different herbs will go a long way to aid survival, as improvisation is great for survival.

Building of Shelter

In seeking for shelter in order to survive, maybe against the wild onslaught of wild animals or perhaps the cold, a man traversing the wild need to make use of such natural coverings as a cave or contrast one using sticks and tarp or even leaves. Another important skill needed to survive out there in the wild, securing of shelter is perhaps as valued for privacy as it is for protection.

The importance of having this fire making skill before venturing out into the wild cannot be overemphasized. Not only does fire warm the body, but it also helps in cooking food as well as giving the survival a feel of home and the hope of getting back to it.

Sometimes, fire keeps wild animals away from a survivor making his way through the woods. However, there are times wild animals are drawn to fire for warmth and making fire at this point would be very dangerous.

The Need For Water


A person trying to survive the wild will find it difficult to without water. A person can only survive as long as five days without any intake of water, and this further points to the need to preserve water, even the ones in the body. Perspiration brings about water loss, and in order to prevent this, the individual will have to regulate his or her movement. Also regular intake of water when it is available should be encouraged as it will increase the amount of water in the body, pushing the body further away from dehydration.

Dehydration causes dizziness, lethargy, headache, and even confusion. Eventually dehydration can leas to death. When one is dehydrated, his or her performance is affected and most times the person losses focus. In the wild where clear thinking is essential for survival, dehydration is bad news.

Getting Food

In the wild, one can get culinary root tubers, edible nuts, beans, cereals, edible moss, edible mushrooms and fruits among others. Simple preparation by boiling will do and the food will be ready to be eaten. Most of the food contain calories which  a survivor needs for energy. Plants provide the easiest food one can find in the jungle with enough nourishment to match the ones gotten from hunting animals. Their static positions and the little or nothing it required to eat of them make for the easiest acquiring of nourishment.


Navigating Through The Wild

This skill might be the difference between life and death for anyone who is trying to survive out in the wild. Most survival situations are easily taken care of once the survivor finds his way to a safe place or a place he knows. There are different styles in navigation and they include: Celestial Navigation—this involves making use of the sun and the night sky to get a read on the four cardinal points in order to maintain a steady course of travel. It also includes making use of compass, maps or GPS receiver. Reckoning—this entails using the condition of the environment to navigate.

Most survivors would opt for the first.


Nobody prays for things to go south, but it is better to be prepared when things try to snap out of your control than to be left staring mouth agape at a situation which a little preparedness would have helped one overcome. Surviving in the wild requires skills, most of which our grand civilisation may not prepare us for. It is therefore important that we assimilate these skills before we go close to something that may put us in such situations where the skills are requires.
